Unscreened AI Privacy Policy

Who Uses Unscreened

Accounts are for adults, 18 or older. Students do not have accounts and do not use the app: they do their work on paper, and an adult scans it.

What We Collect

About you: your name, your email address, a password (we store only a scrambled hash of it) or your Google sign-in, and your answers when you sign up: what brings you to Unscreened and, if you choose, how you heard about us and your school's name. We also record the first page you visited, the website that sent you (its address only, such as instagram.com), the campaign tags in that link, and the version of our Terms and this policy you accepted.

About students, as you add it: their names, grades and classes, notes you write, and the scans of their paper work.

How We Protect Student Names

Student names are encrypted on our servers with keys managed in AWS Key Management Service, and only people you add to your workspace can see them. When our team helps with support, we see anonymized labels such as "Student 4" instead of names, and every time names are decrypted, it is recorded.

AI and Student Work

We use AI services to read and grade scanned work and to write follow-up worksheets. Before any AI model reads it, we hide the name line on every page of student work, and we remove students' names from notes, chat, titles and instructions. Names written inside an answer may still be read so the work can be graded. Curriculum you upload should be blank teaching material, not student work.

Our AI providers process this data only to send us results. Under their business terms, they do not use it to train their models, and they keep it only for a limited time, such as to check for abuse, before deleting it.

What We Never Do

• We never sell student or account data.
• We never use it for advertising.
• We never use student data to train AI models.

Who Can See Your Workspace

Your students and their work live in a workspace. Only its members can see them: the person who made it, and the people they invite or approve. A workspace's admins can remove anyone at any time.

How We Improve Unscreened

Building a good product means understanding how people use it. We use a product analytics service, PostHog, that records how you use Unscreened: the pages you visit, what you click and what you type. It can replay a session so we can see where something was confusing or broke.

We use this only to improve Unscreened. We don't sell it, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't follow you around the web. Passwords and the names of students you've added are hidden from these recordings. We keep recordings for up to 90 days.

Service Providers

We share data only with the companies that run Unscreened for us, and only for that work:

• Google Cloud Vertex AI (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI: reading and grading work, and writing worksheets.
• Amazon Web Services: file storage, encryption keys and email.
• Google: sign-in with Google, if you use it.
• Railway: our servers, database, backups and logs.
• Vercel: our website, and simple counts of visits and clicks on our public pages.
• PostHog: product analytics and session recordings, so we can see how people use Unscreened and make it better.
• Sentry: error reports, so we can fix problems.
• Slack: messages to our team about how the service is running.

We also share information when the law requires it.

Keeping and Deleting Data

We keep your account and your students' information while you use Unscreened. Ask us to delete a student, your account or your workspace, and we will delete it, students' names included, within 30 days. Copies in our backups are gone within 30 days after that, as those backups expire. What we keep afterward is anonymized learning data that no longer identifies anyone.

Children, Families and Schools

Unscreened is built to meet FERPA and COPPA. Parents and guardians add their own children. Teachers and tutors confirm when they sign up that they have permission to share their students' work: they are the students' parent, or the school or the parents have authorized it. A parent or guardian can ask us to review or delete their child's information at any time.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, student names have their own layer of encryption, and access to our production systems is limited to our team.

Changes

When we change this policy, we post the new version here and ask you to accept it the next time you sign in.
